Breakdown - UFC 79: Nemesis
By Mike MacLeod • Dec 27th, 2007 • Category: NewsUFC 79: Nemesis is being headlined by the rubber match between Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Title. Additionally, Chuck Liddell takes on Wanderlei Silva. Here’s the breakdown.
Matt Hughes vs Georges St. Pierre - UFC Welterweight Title
Hughes assumes that he can beat current champ Matt Serra at any time. I’ll comment on that at another time. But he is looking for an advantage against St. Pierre, and he thought he had one with short notice for GSP. The advantage doesn’t exist. St. Pierre is in top shape and he has added some great takedown defense to his arsenal. Hughes will be overwhelmed, making retirement look a whole lot better. St. Pierre via TKO in the third round.
Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva
I thought this was the “most anticipated fight in MMA history.” Then, why is it relegated to being the sidekick to Hughes vs St. Pierre? Both fighters are coming in with two losses, which makes one wonder where the loser goes afterwards. Chuck will handle the initial aggression from Silva and then make him pay. Liddell via TKO in the second.
Ryoto Machida vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Sokoudjou has had a great start to his short career but he will be frustrated by the methodical ways of Machida. Machida will handle Sokoudjou’s aggression much better than he did against Kazuhiro Nakamura. The fight will definitely go the distance with Sokoudjou’s hand raised at the end, thanks to forcing the action.
Rich Clementi vs Melvin Guillard
I’m excited about this match. It should be fast, furious, and over before the end of the first round. Guillard wins via knockout.
Eddie Sanchez vs Soa Palelei
This is going to have the action that fans are hoping to see from Liddell and Silva. Both Sanchez and Palelei like to swing for the fence which could make this the fight of the night. I’m taking Palelei in this one. Palelei is the more polished of the two and he will land a higher percentage of his punches. Palelei knocks Sanchez out in the second round.
James Irvin vs Luis Cane
This is another undercard fight that could be more exciting then the headliners. Irvin might catch Cane in a submission if he can shoot without catching a punch. I don’t think that will happen. Cane via TKO in the first.
Doug Evans vs Mark Bocek
This will be a solid fight between two fighters that were both overwhelmed in their last UFC fights. I don’t think the styles of the two fighter will make for a very exciting fight. While Evans is a solid wrestler, Bocek should impose his will throughout the fight. Bocek wins via decision.
Nate Mohr vs. Manny Gamburyan
Mohr is outmatched in this fight. Gamburyan will take him down early and pound Mohr until the ref calls him off. Gamburyan via TKO in the first round.
Jordan Radev vs Dean Lister
Another mismatch. Lister will overpower Radev, take him down, and submit him in the first round.
Roan Carneiro vs. Tony DeSouza
This fight won’t be exciting to most of the crowd, but for anyone that loves the ground game, this one has a lot of potential. In a match filled with a lot of submission attempts and counters, Carneiro catches DeSouza for the tap out in the third round.
