HDNet Fights Cancels February Event
By Mike MacLeod • Jan 4th, 2008 • Category: NewsLoretta Hunt of The Fight Network is reporting that HDNet Fights has cancelled its event scheduled for February 15 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The promotion will hold its next event in early spring or summer.”We’re taking the time to build a little more infrastructure that’s all our own,” said HDNet president Guy Mezger. “Right now, we share a lot of it with HDNet and the [Dallas] Mavericks.”
Even though HDNet aired five live events in the last three months, including the return of number-one ranked fighter Fedor Emelianenko at “Yarennoka” on New Year’s Eve, this cancellation could be a sign of bad things to come. “Time to build infrastructure” does not provide much clarity to how well things are going inside the operation.
Hunt reports that s new date for HDNet Fights will be dependent on availability of the American Airlines Center, also owned by HDNet owner Mark Cuban. “The availability of our venue is tough in March and April,” said Mezger.
HDNet Fights will continue to air events in cooperation with the International Fight League, Ring of Combat and Sportfight. Hunt reports that they may also air another “Yarennoka” event from Japan, tentatively scheduled for March.
HDNet television has already pledged itself to broadcast 24 MMA events in 2008. It is currently available in six million homes.
