Lesnar vs Sylvia Down The Line?
By Mike MacLeod • Jan 10th, 2008 • Category: NewsWe reported earlier that Mr. Sunshine had an extensive interview with two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia which occurred shortly before UFC 79. The focus of the interview was Sylvia’s reaction to some unflattering comments Matt Hughes made about him in his recently released book, American Made.
What we didn’t report at the time were some comments that Sylvia made about Brock Lesnar, the former NCAA wrestling champion and WWE star who makes his UFC debut against Frank Mir in February.
“I don’t think he’s gonna have a future in MMA,” said Sylvia. “I think Frank Mir’s gonna beat him.
“I’ve trained with Brock. I think Frank Mir’s gonna submit him. He’s a baby. Don’t kick him because he’ll get hurt. He’s a hell of a wrestler man, the guy can wrestle and he’s strong, but he can’t punch and he can’t get kicked. And he don’t know how to kick. He can only go straight forward. I think Mir will submit him.”
Sylvia said that he believes that the UFC may have plans down the road between himself and Mir.
“I think Mir has what it takes to submit him,” continued Sylvia. “They could be lining this up between Frank Mir and myself down the road. They tried to [set up the] fight when I was supposed to fight Randy, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission would not sanction it. They thought I was too good for him. If he wins this fight I don’t think they could say he’s not good enough to fight me anymore.”
Perhaps these words got back to Lesnar as he had some choice words about Sylvia’s performance when he lost his title to the much smaller Randy Couture.
“Randy Couture comes in and beats Tim Sylvia - makes him look like an ass,” says Lesnar in the UFC 81 preview video. “You don’t let a 197-pound guy come in at heavyweight and beat you. The UFC heavyweight division is starving for a champion.”
Lesnar believes that he is the one to fill that hole.
