Strikeforce has announced that Bob Sapp will take on Jan Nortje on February 23 in Tacoma, Washington. The combined weight of the two men is just under 700 pounds. A television outlet has not yet been announced for Sapp’s American MMA debut, which will take place in the Tacoma Dome.
Bob “The Beat” Sapp, a former offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, has seen action as a professional wrestling, kickboxer, as well as a mixed martial artist. Competing primarily in Japan, he has earned an MMA record of 9-2-1.
Sapp most recently fought at K-1’s “Dynamite!” show this past New Year’s Eve, defeating entertainment personality Bobby Ologun. He has previously defeated former Sumo Grand Champion, Akebono, and lost to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Jan “The Giant” Nortje stands at 6′11′ and has competed as a kickboxer. Despite holding an undefeated record as a professional boxer, Nortje’s MMA record is a less impressive 25-17.
“I’m extremely excited,” says Nortje, a former training partner of Sapp’s. “I’ve always seen Bob get big opportunities so I think it’s my turn to show what I can do against him.”
